Choosing a programme also means choosing the education system in which your qualification will be awarded.
Italian higher education is organised in successive cycles, with workload measured in credits. This makes it easier to compare levels and study requirements across the European Higher Education Area.
European systems are not identical, however. An Italian qualification is not automatically recognised in every country and does not automatically grant access to a regulated profession.
CHOOSING PERUGIA
Perugia is more than one university
The city is home to institutions with different histories and purposes: the University of Perugia, the University for Foreigners, the Pietro Vannucci Academy of Fine Arts, the Francesco Morlacchi Conservatory, Istituto Italiano Design and the Higher School for Language Mediators, as well as other specialist providers.
You can follow a university, arts, music, language or design pathway. Different institutions award different qualifications and set their own admission rules.
Location matters too. Some programmes are taught in Perugia’s historic centre or university hubs; others belong to Perugia-based institutions but include classes, laboratories or placements elsewhere in Umbria.
A programme name alone is not enough. Check who awards the qualification, where you will actually study, the teaching language and the admission conditions.

Finding the programme is the first step. Before deciding, check whether your qualification is suitable, how admission works, which language level is required and, if you studied outside Italy, which procedure applies to you.
Is there a test or assessment?
A programme may require an initial assessment, TOLC, entrance test, limited places, specific academic prerequisites or an open selection semester. Open admission does not always mean automatic enrolment.
What is the teaching language, and what level do you need?
The teaching language and the language requirement for admission are not always the same. Check the required level, accepted certificates and assessment method on the official programme page.
Was your qualification awarded outside Italy?
You may need additional documents and a specific assessment. Non-EU applicants living abroad who need a visa normally pre-enrol through Universitaly; the visa decision remains with the consular authority.

What might one year in Perugia cost?
There is no single figure that applies to everyone. These four scenarios use the same starting assumptions to show the likely order of magnitude.

ADiSU Umbria is the regional public body that manages scholarships, university dining and student residences. International students may apply too; eligibility depends on financial circumstances, documentation and the annual call.
If you cover all costs yourself
Around €8,150–€8,550 per yearIncludes rent, utilities, food, connectivity and an estimate of fees at a public institution. The assumed €500 rental deposit is a separate initial outlay.

LIVING AND STUDYING IN PERUGIA

Before looking for a home, find out where classes, laboratories and placements actually take place.
Choose the programme before the neighbourhood
A UniPG programme may be based in Perugia, Terni, Foligno, Narni or Assisi. Even within Perugia, university hubs are spread across different areas. Check addresses, laboratories, placements and transport before signing a lease.
Getting around a city built on a hill
Buses, the Minimetrò, lifts and escalators connect the historic centre with lower parts of the city. Two addresses that look close on a map may involve very different routes and travel times.
Dining halls and residences are spread across the area
ADiSU manages dining halls and residences in different parts of Perugia and other university towns in Umbria. Programme admission, dining benefits and accommodation follow separate procedures.
Daily life starts before classes do
Students arriving from abroad may need to arrange a tax code, residence permit, healthcare cover, SIM card, bank account and access to university services. Not every procedure applies to every student.
